Maracatu is one of the most popular and syncopated rhythms from the state of Pernambuco in Northeastern Brazil.
It is played mostly on streets during Carnival parades, but it is also present in all major state celebrations.
The main drum is a lower surdo called Alfaia. The powerful ensemble consists of Alfaias, Caixas, shakers and agogos.
This piece was written for the celebration of the 10th edition of IKMMA – “International Katarzyna Myćka Marimba Academy“.
