Brazilian Suite for Vibraphone , Strings and Percussion by Ney Rosauro

This 5 movement suite is composed using popular rhythms and dances from the rich Brazilian folklore.
The main intention is to combine Brazilian popular rhythms with the traditional orchestral style. It is not easy to make an orchestra play the proper groove of Brazilian music, so this suite is intended to introduce and teach how to play some of the main Brazilian popular dances.
An unique feature of this piece is that in each movement, there is an optional open “chorus” where the soloist can improvise on the given chords. If the soloists cannot improvise he/she should play the notes that are written.

Mov.1 Danca, has an ostinato rhythm played by the Berimbau (a one-string percussion instrument) that will conduct the entire piece.
The rhythm is slightly based on the capoeira rhythm from Northeastern Brazil, and the soloist and orchestra will dialogue presenting some characteristic melodies of this type of music. A lively and exciting movement where all the players are involved in a virtuoso way.

Mov.2 is a beautiful Waltz full of grace which represents well the somehow sad and lyric melody lines that are characteristic of Brazilian music.

Mov.3 Coco, is also a rhythm from Northeastern Brazil. It is a samba-like dance that the natives sing and dance while working on the beaches cutting and opening coconuts that later will be sold on the market. An energetic and gracious movement where all the players are grooving with joy.

Mov.4 Bossa-Choro is a combination of Bossa Nova and Choro (rhythms from Rio de Janeiro), that starts and finishes with a bolero-like groove.

Mov.5 Frevo is a lively dance that is played on the streets during the carnival in Recife, a state in Northeastern Brazil that is very rich in folklore.
It is good way to finish the suite in a joyful mood.
